THERE IS A RIP IN THE TIES THAT BIND US AS A NATION AND IT SEEMS TO BE INCREASING WITH EVERY PASSING ELECTION AND EVERY TRAGIC VIOLENT EVENT. WE ARE SEEMINGLY MORE STRATIFIED THAN AT ANY POINT IN OUR NATION’S HISTORY. THERE IS ALMOST NO BREAK IN HOW VIOLENT WE ARE TOWARDS EACH OTHER.
In nine ever increasingly urgent chapters, The Great Divide ties our current violence and division to the origins of violence in America. It examines the damaging effects of African American slavery and Native American genocide and charts the rise of white christian nationalism as the existential menace that it is.
The solution we propose is education. By not excluding tragedy in favor of exceptionalism and romance in our schools and our discourse, by including the entirety of the American experience, we can experience our history together and begin to heal.
